In these troubled times, how precious home is. It can be snatched from you in a moment. That's what everyone is fighting for.

My paintings in the new show at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold, Suffolk, England, are about just that. The calm, quiet, cherished everyday stuff.

Always fascinated by the light that pours in, energising the stillness of a room, the contrast of outside and inside, dark and light, Annabel Mednick explores the drama of the quiet moment.

In between the big events of life – birth, death etc – people are living normal lives, her work is a celebration of that.

The square format and the absence of a frame add a contemporary twist to a timeless subject. In her interiors, the stones of the building have been there for centuries, while the people are transient; the light from the outside world comes in and moves around them, linking them to the past, the future and everyone else.
