ANNABEL MEDNICK
artist, actor, instructor

I am a figurative artist, based in Ipswich, Suffolk, where I make expressive paintings and portraits full of nuances of light, colour and atmosphere mainly in oil on canvas.

I try to capture the intensity and flow of the fleeting moment, the play of the light, and the pleasures, fears and frustrations of everyday life.

I often work thematically over periods of time to create bodies of work to be presented in their entirety.

I have exhibited widely and I have won awards for my portraits, including a prize at the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery. I regularly exhibit in venues in London, East Anglia and abroad, and I have my work in numerous private collections. I have significant experience as an art instructor, working in schools and colleges as well as non-educational settings.
I have enjoyed a varied career that has involved work in theatre, film and television as well as solo and collaborative work in performance, video and film projects.

OTHER Professional ACTIVITIES, teaching and workshops

I have taught evening classes in art and painting, first at Suffolk College for adults of all abilities, subsequently at the Ipswich Institute and from my studio.
I also regularly run art workshops, and give talks and demonstrations to local art groups.  For two years I was chair of Key Arts, an artist-run space in Ipswich, providing leadership and support for the development of a programme of events and exhibitions engaging numerous artists in new projects. In 2011 I designed  the set and costumes for a contemporary dance performance at Hayward’s Heath sixth form College and in 2004 I was part of a film project at a primary school in Leytonstone facilitating the children in costume design. I have also worked with Inside Out Community Arts Project in Ipswich, running art workshops for people recovering from metal health problems.
Whilst living in Brussels (1996-1999) I designed theatre sets and oversaw their construction, working with a mixed age group of volunteers.
